Ccuull Pool, as its compound name(Ccuull meaning Honey & Pool meaning Grass) of the space indicates, is a hybrid project space for ongoing interaction and improvisational experimentation among cultural producers.
The space was initiated by hospital invitation by Ccuull(Art Director Choi Jeong Hwa) of Art Space Pool(Director Heejin Kim), a non-profit contemporary artist space located in Gugi-dong, Seoul. You can get much detailed information on the contextual background and joint effort between Ccuull and Pool from the intro sectionin this website. Ccuull and Pool, reflecting the two year long condition of its temporary squatting of the building, a particular hybridity of the physical premise, and busy commercial mobility of street youth culture in the area, proposes a section of the building to be Ccuull Pool, a pilot spot of creative autonomy and relationship where cultural producers of diverse fields experiment self-initiated art production in continuous relationship with the physical site, fellow artists, neighboring cultural initiatives and local community. Idea-provoking proposals on feasible collaboration, mutual respect and feedbacking, constant mediation in-between fellow artists, responsible performativity, and thorough self-management are the key operating mechanism that maintains Ccuull Pool. There is no one host, but multiple-centered creative agents whose evolution and relation in their practices shape the nature and form of Ccuull Pool.
Started on its onset in April 2010 as parallel/integrated presentations by seven artists(Kim Sang-don, Kim Sang-jin, Kwon Yong-ju, Kim Hong-bin, Lee Su-seong, Yoon Ji-won, and Lim Jeong-gyu), Ccuull Pool has extended itself to draw in various ideas and fellow artists through a weekly program, “Proposals in Stock.” Triggering potential proposals that had been deserted, given up or deformed by multiple factors, the program served a meeting medium where the ideas are reactivated in informal group discussions. In the process, the Ccuull Pool network of artists reached more than 70, and two artists, Rheim Alkhadi and Nam Sang-su made their first soft physical intrusions onto Ccuull Pool.
